Paying Fees with Financial Aid

Financial Aid funds are first applied to your current term charges. Balances from a prior term must be paid directly by the student.

  • If your financial aid package is less than the balance owed for the current term, you are responsible for paying the difference. Payment plan options are available.
  • If your financial aid package is more than the balance owed for the current term, the extra funds will be refunded to you.

Disbursements and Credit for Prior Learning (CPL)

  • Credit for Prior Learning (CPL) means earning college credit for verified college level skills and knowledge gained outside of a college classroom (such as work experience, training, or military service).
  • Only currently enrolled units count toward financial aid enrollment intensity.
  • Federal Student Aid (Pell Grant, Direct Loan, and Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant) cannot be used for any units earned through CPL.
  • Learn more about CPL on our Credit for Prior Learning page.

Understanding Financial Aid Types

  • Each semester's Pell Grant is disbursed in four increments of 25% throughout each semester according to the disbursement schedule above.
  • To receive disbursements on time, your financial aid file must be complete.
    • If your file is incomplete, you will be paid on the earliest alternative disbursement date, this will include any missed disbursements up to that point.
  • Pell Grant disbursements are based on your enrollment intensity as of the census date each semester. Changes to your enrollment before census may impact your eligibility.
  • After census, your enrollment intensity is locked in for that term. Review your specific course information as census dates can vary.
  • Withdrawing from courses may impact your Satisfactory Academic Progress calculation and could result in owing funds back to the college. Visit Overpayments & Return to Title IV for more information.
  • FSEOG funds are disbursed after the semester census date has passed.
  • Award amounts are based on enrollment status:
    • $250 per semester for students enrolled in 6–11.5 units
    • $500 per semester for students enrolled in 12 or more units, or 9 or more units with a PACE accommodation.
  • The State of California awards Cal Grants on an ongoing basis, and Ï㽶ÊÓƵ certifies eligible students weekly.
  • Students must maintain enrollment in 6 or more units to be certified.
  • Late starting classes are not certified or paid until they reach their individual census dates.
  • Disbursements begin on the estimated first disbursement date, once census requirements are met. Students with late starting classes may receive their funds on an alternative disbursement date.
  • Additional disbursements are made every two weeks following the first disbursement as funds become available.
  • Students must be enrolled in 12 or more units, or 9 or more with an approved PACE accommodation, to receive a partial award.
  • Students must be enrolled in 15 or more units to receive the full award.
  • Late starting classes are not certified or paid until they have reached their individual census dates.
  • Disbursement dates for SSCG are approximate and depend on Cal Grant disbursement timing.
  • SSCG funds can only be issued after the Cal Grant has been disbursed.
  • Student Success Completion Grants awarded after the estimated first disbursement date will be issued on the next available disbursement date, which may be the next semester.
  • The State of California awards Chafee Grants on an ongoing basis, and Ï㽶ÊÓƵ certifies eligible students and requests funds weekly.
  • Class census dates must be met before certification and disbursement can begin.
  • Disbursements are expected to begin on the first standard disbursement date; but may vary depending on when their classes begin.
  • Students enrolled in late-starting classes may receive funds on the second standard disbursement date.
  • Additional disbursements are made every two weeks following the first and second standard disbursement dates, as funds become available.
  • Chafee Grants awarded after the estimated first disbursement date will be issued on the next available disbursement date, which may be the next semester.
  • Students will receive an email with anticipated disbursement dates when a loan is awarded.
  • To receive a disbursement of loan funds on the anticipated loan disbursement dates, you must:
    • Accept the Loan Award in .
    • Be registered in 6 units or more. If you have late start classes, you must already be attending at least one class.
    • Complete Federal Entrance Counseling.
    • Complete the Master Promissory Note (MPN).
  • By law, loan disbursements will not be made until all criteria are met.
  • Once the funds have been received, the award will be updated on the student’s Financial Aid Offer.
  • It takes one to two weeks to generate and mail a check to the student.
